Get the Gift of Lyft and Avoid the Heat

The Colorado Department of Transportation, the Governor’s Highway Safety Administration and the ridesharing company Lyft, are teaming up to try and help keep intoxicated drivers off the road this holiday season.

The ‘Gift of Lyft’ campaign, launched at the start of December, will be providing 1,000 ride credits worth $10 each, to everyone who signs a pledge that they are committed to driving sober during the holidays, and into the new year.

The ride credits will be handed out in the three Colorado cities who had the highest number of DUI fatalities in 2019: Denver, Colorado Springs and Thornton. Colorado Springs pledges can pick up their passes on December 10th and 31st, and should check the CDOT website for location information.

Not accidentally, there is another, related campaign running this month as well. The Heat is On enhanced DUI enforcement campaign is set to run on through the first half of the month, and then pick back up in time for New Year’s Eve.

This campaign will see the Colorado State Patrol and local law enforcement agencies around the state, stepping up their efforts to identify and cite intoxicated drivers before they can get into a potentially devastating collision. High-visibility saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints will be occurring around the state during these periods.

According to Colorado State Patrol Chief Colonel Matthew Packard, “We strive to keep impaired drivers off Colorado roadways throughout the year. These enforcement periods are meant to deter drivers from making the poor decision to drive impaired. Sadly, the data shows thousands of people still choose to drive impaired.”

Despite the fact that the Coronavirus pandemic has forced many of us to stay at home and avoid travel, DUI fatalities in Colorado for the month of November were 14% higher than November of 2019, with 168 deaths in that single month alone.
