Brain Injuries in Young Children are Usually the Result of a Fall

A study performed by the University of California, Davis School of Medicine reviewed data of more than 43,000 children who sustained head injuries in recent years. The study found that falls were the most common cause of head injuries in young children. Falls were responsible for 77% of brain injuries in children under the age of 2 and 38% of the brain injuries in children 2-12 years of age.

Sadly, the majority of traumatic brain injuries in young children could be prevented if children wore bike helmets and seatbelts all the time. Among kids who suffered a head injury in a car accident—over 50% were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the injury. Even worse, more than 80% of the children who were injured in bicycling accidents were not wearing a helmet.

The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, only looked at traumatic brain injuries that cause brain bleeding and it did not cover more minor head injuries, also known as concussions.

There was good news from the study—it seems that deaths among children from car accidents has dropped 40%, largely because of seatbelt and airbag use. The children in the study with severe head injuries, 98% survived their brain bleeds, 17% required brain operations, and 43% had more than one procedure performed.

Traumatic brain injuries can be devastating for young children and young adults. When the brain is compromised in an accident or fall, it loses vital oxygen, resulting in permanent injury and damage. Children and young adults can become permanently disabled and require a lifetime of care after a brain injury.

If you or someone you love has sustained a brain injury in a fall or car accident, it is important to seek legal assistance immediately. Your lawyer will need to review the details of your accident and your injury to determine if you have cause to file a case. If your injuries are permanent, you will need additional compensation to ensure that you receive the money you need both now—and throughout your life.
